NETHERLANDS JOINS STANDBY ARRANGEMENTS FOR PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS

19981013 On 13 October, the Netherlands became the nineteenth country to sign a memorandum of understanding on the standby arrangements for United Nations peacekeeping operations.

The signing ceremony took place in the Office of the Under-Secretary- General for Peacekeeping Operations. The Permanent Representative of the Netherlands to the United Nations, Ambassador Jaap Ramaker, signed the memorandum on behalf of his country; the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Bernard Miyet, signed for the United Nations.

The other 18 countries which have signed the memorandum are: Jordan, Denmark, Ghana, Malaysia, Austria, Italy, Singapore, Bolivia, Ukraine, Nepal, Uruguay, Argentina, Bangladesh, Lithuania, Nigeria, Finland, Germany and Romania.

To date, 77 countries have indicated their willingness to participate in the standby arrangements regime, which was set up in 1994 to provide a means to accelerate the deployment of a new peacekeeping operation and to rapidly enhance the capacity of an existing mission.
