NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MADAGASCAR PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

19981002 Biographical Note

The new Permanent Representative of Madagascar, Jean Delacroix Bakoniarivo, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan today.

Mr. Bakoniarivo was the Permanent Representative of Madagascar to the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and the Economic Commission for Africa from 1994 until assuming his current position. Prior to that, he served at Madagascar's Embassy in Moscow as First Counsellor (1988-1994) and Cultural Adviser (1984 to 1988).

Mr. Bakoniarivo began his career with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a Division Chief, General Affairs Office, in 1979. He subsequently served as Chancellery Division Chief, Protocol Office, in 1982, and as Acting Chief of Protocol in 1983.

Mr. Bakoniarivo obtained diplomas in: international political affairs, from the International Institute of Public Administration in Paris; and diplomacy and the administration of international organizations, from the Faculty of Law at the University of Paris XI (Sceaux). He also earned a Master of Arts in law and a Bachelor of Arts in public law and political science.

Mr. Bakoniarivo was born on 18 April 1944 in Befandriana-Nord. He is married and has two children.
