SECRETARY-GENERAL DISCUSSES AFGHANISTAN CONFLICT WITH SECRETARY-GENERAL OF ORGANIZATION OF ISLAMIC CONFERENCE
19980929 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Kofi Annan:The Secretary-General this morning met the Secretary-General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, Azeddine Laraki. During their meeting, the two Secretaries-General primarily discussed the issue of Afghanistan and the efforts of the two organizations to reach a peaceful solution to the conflict.
Secretary-General Laraki indicated his willingness to join the impending mission of the Secretary-General's Special Envoy, Lakhdar Brahimi, but he will not be available until 20 October. In the meantime, he noted that senior officials of the Islamic Conference would be available for Mr. Brahimi's mission.
In their discussion about the conflict in Afghanistan, the two Secretaries-General expressed their concern at the situation, in particular about the reported massive violations of human rights after the capture of Mazar-i-Sharif and Bamiyan.
