ROMANIA JOINS STANDBY ARRANGEMENTS FOR PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS
19980924 Romania became today the eighteenth country to sign a memorandum of understanding on the standby arrangements for United Nations peacekeeping operations.The signing ceremony took place in the Office of the Under-Secretary- General for Peacekeeping Operations. The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Romania, Andrei Gabriel Plesu, signed the memorandum for Romania; the Under- Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Bernard Miyet, signed it on behalf of the United Nations.
Under the memorandum, Romania indicated it would provide the United Nations with protected infantry battalion, a military field hospital, military observers, staff and police officers, and logistics personnel.
The other 17 countries which have signed the memorandum are: Jordan, Denmark, Ghana, Malaysia, Austria, Italy, Singapore, Bolivia, Ukraine, Nepal, Uruguay, Argentina, Bangladesh, Lithuania, Nigeria, Finland and Germany.
To date, 77 countries have indicated their willingness to participate in the standby arrangements, which were set up in 1994 to accelerate the process of deployment for peacekeeping operations.
