SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS BRIGADIER-GENERAL CAMERON ROSS OF CANADA AS FORCE COMMANDER OF UNDOF

19980922 Biographical Note Secretary-General Kofi Annan has appointed Brigadier-General Cameron Ross of Canada as Force Commander of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF). Brigadier-General Ross will assume command of UNDOF on 1 October 1998. Brigadier-General Ross succeeds Major-General David Stapleton of Ireland who served as Commander from 1 June 1997 to 31 August 1998. The Secretary-General takes this opportunity to pay a warm tribute to Major-General Stapleton for his distinguished service in this peacekeeping mission.

Brigadier-General Ross has served in the Canadian Armed Forces since 1973 and has held his present rank since 1996. He will be promoted to Major-General at the time of the appointment as Force Commander. He has held a variety of appointments, including Commander of the Combat Training Centre, Commander of the Canadian Forces Base Edmonton and Director of Operations for the Canadian Forces. His present appointment is Commander of Land Force Atlantic Area.

Brigadier-General Ross has extensive peacekeeping experience. He served in the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) (1974) as troop leader and the United Nations Angola Verification Mission (UNAVEM II) (1992) as Chief of Staff. He also worked at United Nations Headquarters (1993).

Brigadier-General Ross has a bachelor's degree in political science. Born on 8 February 1949, he is married and has two children.
