NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF SAINT LUCIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS
19980918 Biographical NoteJulian Robert Hunte, the new Permanent Representative of Saint Lucia to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
It is the first diplomatic assignment for Mr. Hunte, a business executive and political leader. At the time of his appointment, he was Chairman and Chief Executive of The Julian R. Hunte Group of Companies. From 1996 to 1998, he was also Chairman of the Standing Conference of Popular Democratic Parties of the Eastern Caribbean (SCOPE).
Mr. Hunte, an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, served as Leader of the Opposition from 1987 to 1996, and was the Parliamentary Representative for Gros Islet from 1987 until last year. Between 1984 and 1996, he was the political leader of the Saint Lucia Labour Party.
From 1983 to 1984, Mr. Hunte was Vice-Chairman of the Saint Lucia Labour Party and Chairman of the Re-organizing Committee. He served as Mayor of the City of Castries from 1970 to 1971.
Born on 14 March 1940, Mr. Hunte trained in business administration and accounts. He is married and has four children.
