NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MOLDOVA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Ion Botnaru, the new Permanent Representative of the Republic of Moldova to the United Nations, presented his credentials today to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Botnaru was from 1994 his country's Ambassador to Turkey, Egypt and Kuwait, with residency in Ankara. Mr. Botnaru was the Acting Foreign Minister of the Republic of Moldova from 1993 to 1994 and the Deputy Foreign Minister from 1992 to 1993.

Mr. Botnaru joined his country's foreign service in 1989 as the Deputy Director General in the Department of Information and was promoted, in 1990, to the post of Director General of the Department of Political Affairs.

During his diplomatic career, Mr. Botnaru represented his country at various international meetings, including those of the Council of Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) and the North Atlantic Cooperation Committee (NACC). He was also head of his Government's delegation to the 1993 United Nations World Conference on Human Rights.

Early in his professional life, Mr. Botnaru was an academic, working as a scientific researcher at the Academy of Science in Chisinau (1983 to 1984) and a professor of international relations at Chisinau State University (1987 to 1989).

Mr. Botnaru received a doctorate degree in international relations from Moscow State University in 1987.

Born on 19 August 1954, Mr. Botnaru is married and has two children.
