NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF GERMANY PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Dieter Kastrup, the new Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Prior to his current posting, Mr. Kastrup had served as his country's Ambassador to Italy since 1995.

Mr. Kastrup entered the service of the Federal Foreign Office of Germany in 1967 with his first posting being as Third Secretary to the German Embassy in Teheran. He remained in Iran until 1971 -- rising to the post of First Secretary -- when he returned to the Foreign Office in Bonn to work, first as Counsellor and then as Deputy Division Head.

In 1975, Mr. Kastrup was re-posted to the German Embassy in Washington, D.C., where he remained until 1978 when he became Permanent Representative at the Consulate General in Houston, Texas. He returned to Germany in 1980 and held a series of positions, as follows: Head of Division (1980 to 1985); Head of Directorate (1985 to 1988); Director-General (1988 to 1991); and State Secretary (1991 to 1995).

Mr. Kastrup received a doctorate degree in law from the University of Cologne in 1961. In addition, between 1965 and 1976, he received practical professional training for foreign service.

Born in March of 1937 in Bielefeld, Mr. Kastrup is married and has two children.
