NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF IRELAND PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Richard Ryan, the new Permanent Representative of Ireland to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Until his present appointment, Mr. Ryan was Ireland's Ambassador to Spain from January 1994, serving concurrently as Ambassador to Algeria, Andorra and Tunisia.

Mr. Ryan was Ambassador to the Republic of Korea in September 1989. He served as Minister-Counsellor (Political) at the Irish Embassy in London in 1988, and prior to that, Counsellor in 1983.

After joining the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1973, Mr. Ryan was appointed First Secretary of the Permanent Representation of Ireland to the European Communities in Brussels, Belgium in 1980. He was seconded to the Commission of the European Communities from June 1982 to October 1983.

Mr. Ryan, who was born in Dublin in 1946, was educated at Oatlands College and University College, both in Dublin, Ireland.

He is married and has three children.
