NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF ESTONIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

19980909 Biographical Note

Sven Jurgenson, the new Permanent Representative of Estonia to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Jurgenson served in his country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, first as the Deputy Political Director and then Director of the Division for International Organizations and Security Policy from 1995 to 1996, and then as the Director-General of the Political Department from 1996 until his present appointment. Also since 1996, Mr. Jurgenson was the Ambassador of Estonia to Turkey, residing in Tallinn.

From 1993 to 1995, Mr. Jurgenson was the Minister-Counsellor, Chargé d'affaires for the Embassy of Estonia in Vienna. For two years prior to that, he was Counsellor, Chargé d'affaires at the Estonian Embassy in Helsinki. Also in Helsinki, from 1991 to 1993, he was the Counsellor in the Office for Estonian Culture.

Mr. Jurgenson was a Senior Associate at the Estonian Institute from 1990 to 1991, and a Junior Research Associate and Lecturer of Data Processing at Tallinn Technical University from 1987 to 1990. He completed an International Training Course in Diplomacy at the Institut international d'administration publique (ILAP) in Paris in 1992, and he studied at Ingenieurhoschschule, Dresden, from 1986 to 1987.

Mr. Jurgenson received his Bachelor of Science degree in data processing from the Tallinn Technical University in 1987. He graduated from Tallinn's Forty-fourth High School in 1980, where he participated in the specialized English language programme.

Born on 2 April 1962, Mr. Jurgenson is married with one son.
