SECRETARY-GENERAL WELCOMES SUCCESSFUL OUTCOME OF MEETING ON CRISIS IN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO CONCLUDING TODAY IN ZIMBABWE

19980908 Delegation of Secretary-General to Join Defence Ministers in Addis Ababa 10 September to Establish Modalities and Monitoring of Immediate Cease-fire

The following is the text of a statement attributable to the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General welcomes the successful outcome of the second summit meeting on the crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo held on 7 and 8 September in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.

The Victoria Falls meeting follows last week's extensive discussions on the sidelines of the Non-Aligned Movement summit in Durban held between the Secretary-General, acting in close cooperation with the Secretary-General of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and the heads of State and government concerned. Those discussion led to the 3 September breakfast consultations on the Democratic Republic of the Congo between the Secretary-General and the leaders of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The Secretary-General fully supports the process under way and is dispatching a delegation, which includes military advisers, to the meeting of Defence Ministers and other officials in Addis Ababa on 10 September to establish the modalities for effecting an immediate cease-fire and a mechanism for monitoring compliance.

The Secretary-General calls on all concerned to act decisively in order to translate the Victoria Falls agreement into action that will end the bloodshed and human suffering and allow the rebuilding of the country to begin.
