NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS SECRETARY-GENERAL TO OPEN FIFTY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY SESSION TOMORROW, 9 SEPTEMBER, WITH RINGING OF PEACE BELL
19980908Death of Dag Hammarskjold to Be Commemorated by Wreath Laying 18 September
In commemoration of the opening of the fifty-third session of the General Assembly, the annual Peace Bell Ringing Ceremony will be held tomorrow, 9 September, at the Bell's temporary location on the front lawn. The gathering will begin at 9:15 a.m., with the Secretary-General ringing the Peace Bell at 9:30 a.m.
The annual Wreath Laying Ceremony, commemorating the 37th anniversary of the death of Dag Hammarskjold, who served as Secretary-General from 1953 to 1961, and those who accompanied him on his last mission of peace, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, 18 September. The wreath will be laid by the Secretary-General in the Visitors Lobby.
