NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF BELGIUM PRESENTS CREDENTIALS
19980908 Biographical NoteAndre Adam, the new Permanent Representative of Belgium, presented his credentials today to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
Prior to his current assignment, Mr. Adam served as his country's Ambassador to the United States, a posting he had held since 1994. From 1991 to 1994, he served as the Director General for Political Affairs in the Belgian Ministry for Foreign Affairs, as well as, in 1993, Chairman of the European Political Committee during the Belgian Presidency of the European Union.
Mr. Adam was Ambassador to Zaire (1990-1991), and to Algeria (1986- 1990); Consul General in Los Angeles (1982-1986); and Head of the Energy Division in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs (1980-1982).
Before his diplomatic service which began in 1962 with a posting in the Department of Economic Relations, Mr. Adam worked as a research assistant in the Department of Applied Economics at the University of Brussels. From 1964 to 1978, he held successive diplomatic posts in Havana, Paris, Kinshasa and London. In 1979, he became the Chief of Staff of the Belgian Minister for Foreign Affairs.
Born in September 1936 in Brussels, Mr. Adam holds degrees from the University of Brussels in political and diplomatic science and in public administration. He is married and has four children.
