ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT EXPRESSES GRATIFICATION REGARDING RWANDA TRIBUNAL'S JUDGEMENT ON THE CRIME OF GENOCIDE
19980902 Says It Demonstrates United Nations Ability to Create Mechanisms to Promote Universal Human Rights and Rule of LawThis statement was issued today by the spokesman for the President of the General Assembly, Hennadiy Udovenko (Ukraine):
The President of the General Assembly was gratified to learn that the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda handed down today the first-ever judgement by an international criminal court on the crime of genocide. This is a major achievement for the ad hoc tribunal established to deal with the aftermath of some of the most barbaric atrocities committed in recent time.
Coming on the heels of the establishment of the International Criminal Court, the judgement by the International Criminal Tribunal demonstrates not only the determination of the international community to combat the scourge of crimes against humanity, but also the ability of the United Nations to create effective mechanisms for promoting universal human rights and the rule of law.
