SECRETARY-GENERAL URGES INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY TO RESPOND QUICKLY TO APPEAL FOR ASSISTANCE BY BANGLADESH

19980831 The following statement was issued by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Saturday, 29 August:

The Secretary-General is deeply distressed over the widespread devastation caused by flooding in Bangladesh, where two thirds of the country now lie under water. He calls upon the international community to respond quickly and generously to the appeal launched by the Government of Bangladesh on Wednesday for urgently required assistance for immediate relief and longer-term rehabilitation.

The Secretary-General extends his condolences to all families who have suffered losses as a result of this disaster and wishes to reiterate that the United Nations is prepared to assist Bangladesh in its relief efforts in every way possible.
