SECRETARY-GENERAL WELCOMES AGREEMENT BETWEEN GOVERNMENT OF GUINEA-BISSAU AND SELF PROCLAIMED JUNTA
19980827 Following is the text of a statement attributable to the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:The Secretary-General welcomes the signing of an agreement on 26 August in Praia, Cape Verde, between the Government of Guinea-Bissau and the self- proclaimed Junta, which reaffirms the ceasefire and the Memorandum of Understanding that had been agreed on 26 July. The Secretary-General notes that the meeting between the two sides to the conflict was held under the joint auspices of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Community of the Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP). He hopes that ECOWAS and the CPLP will continue their joint efforts to help achieve lasting peace in Guinea-Bissau.
