SECRETARY-GENERAL EXPRESSES SUPPORT FOR EFFORTS OF SOUTHERN AFRICA DEVELOPMENT COMMUNITY TO RESOLVE CRISIS IN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

19980821 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General wishes to express his full support for the initiative taken by President Mandela, in his capacity as Chairman of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), to bring together the Heads of State of SADC, to bring together interested countries to discuss the crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). He hopes that this will lead to a cessation of hostilities and permit a solution to be found through dialogue which respects Congolese sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Secretary-General urges all concerned to cooperate fully with regional efforts to this end, for the sake of the people of the DRC, who have suffered so much in recent years, so as to permit the attainment of true peace and sustainable development.
