NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF LUXEMBOURG PRESENTS CREDENTIALS
19980805 Biographical NoteHubert Wurth, the new Permanent Representative of Luxembourg to the United Nations, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan today.
Prior to his current appointment, from 1991 to 1998, Mr. Wurth was his country's Ambassador to the Netherlands. During that period, he also served as Luxembourg's Ambassador on special mission for the former Yugoslavia (1996), and, from 1993 to 1995, he was his Government's representative for the Pact on Stability in Europe. From 1988 to 1991, he served as Luxembourg's Ambassador to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, Poland, Finland and Mongolia, in residence in Moscow.
After being called to the bar in Luxembourg as a lawyer in 1997, Mr. Wurth joined his country's Ministry for Foreign Affairs as an attaché in the Department of International Economic Relations in 1978. In addition to holding various positions in the Foreign Ministry over the years, Mr. Wurth was a member of the Luxembourg delegation to the thirty-third and thirty- fourth sessions of the United Nations General Assembly (1978-1979), Deputy Permanent Representative of his country to the Council of Europe (1979), and Chief Secretary to the Vice-President of the Government and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Economic Affairs and Justice (1981).
Mr. Wurth has a degree in law from the University of Paris II, and a diploma in international relations from the Institute of Political Studies in Paris. He also holds a supplementary degree in Luxembourg law.
Born on 15 April 1952 in Luxembourg, Mr. Wurth is married and has two children.
