SECRETARY-GENERAL CALLS FOR EARLY RESTORATION OF CONSTITUTIONAL ORDER IN GUINEA-BISSAU
19980731 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Kofi Annan:The Secretary-General continues to be concerned about the situation in Guinea-Bissau and has been following recent developments closely. The Secretary-General welcomes the recent announcement of a truce in Guinea- Bissau, and the singing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government and the self-proclaimed Junta forces under the auspices of the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries. The Secretary-General renews his call for the early restoration of constitutional order. He also appeals to all parties to respect international humanitarian law and principles and to make every effort to facilitate the free flow of humanitarian assistance to affected populations.
