NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF UNITED KINGDOM PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

19980727 Biographical Note

Sir Jeremy Quentin Greenstock, the new Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Prior to his current assignment, Sir Jeremy served as the Political Director of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, a post he had held since 1996. During the previous year, he had served in the Foreign Office as Deputy Under-Secretary of State for the Middle East, and Central and Eastern Europe.

Sir Jeremy joined his country's diplomatic service in 1969, as Second Secretary in the West African Department of the Foreign Office. In 1970, he was posted to the Middle East Centre for Arab Studies in Lebanon, where he remained until 1972. Between 1972 and 1974, he served at the British Embassy in Dubai, first as Second Secretary and then rising to First Secretary.

In 1974, he was appointed Private Secretary to the British Ambassador in Washington, D.C. Following his posting in the United States, he returned in 1978 to the Foreign Office to join the Planning Staff. The following year, he moved to the Personnel Operations Department of the Foreign Office.

Between 1983 and 1987, Sir Jeremy served in Saudi Arabia as Commercial Counsellor at the British Embassy, first in Jeddah and later in Riyadh. In 1987, his Government appointed him Head of Chancery for the British Embassy in Paris, where he stayed until 1990.

Sir Jeremy then returned to the Foreign Office in the United Kingdom where he worked from 1990 to 1994, first as Assistant Under-Secretary of State for Western and Southern Europe, and later as Deputy Political Director and Permanent Representative to the Western European Union. In 1994, he was appointed Minister to the British Embassy in Washington. He was knighted in June 1998.

Born on 27 July 1943, Sir Jeremy was educated at Harrow School and at Worcester College at Oxford. He is married and has three children.
