ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT OUTRAGED BY MURDER OF FOUR UNMOT PERSONNEL

19980722 The following statement was issued today by the spokesman for the President of the General Assembly:

The President of the General Assembly, Hennadiy Udovenko (Ukraine), was shocked and outraged to learn about the murder of four members of the United Nations Mission of Observers in Tajikistan (UNMOT). It was a cowardly and senseless attack against those who came armed only with goodwill and the desire to help. It was a despicable crime that cannot go unpunished.

The President of the General Assembly would like to convey his sincere condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the victims. It fills him with profound sadness and grief, as once again, over a short period of time, the international community is mourning the loss of United Nations staff who gave up their lives in the service of peace.
