SECRETARY-GENERAL DISTRESSED BY DEATHS OF FOUR UNMOT PERSONNEL

19980721 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General is deeply distressed that the lives of four personnel of the United Nations Mission of Observers in Tajikistan (UNMOT) were lost on a routine patrol. The first report suggests that they were murdered. The Secretary-General condemns such acts should this be proven. The investigation of this incident is under way. The Secretary-General reiterates his great concern for the security of United Nations personnel in peacekeeping missions, and he wishes to recall that the responsibility for the safety of the missions rests with the host countries and the parties to conflicts.

He expresses his sincerest condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the victims.
