SECRETARY-GENERAL ENCOURAGES CAMBODIANS TO VOTE FREELY IN 26 JULY NATIONAL ELECTIONS

19980721 The following was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

As Cambodians prepare to participate on 26 July in national elections in order to choose the members of a new National Assembly and select a government representative of their will, the Secretary-General of the United Nations wishes to add his voice to that of His Majesty King Norodom Sihanouk in encouraging the Cambodian people to vote freely according to their own conscience.

The Secretary-General has confidence in the secrecy of the voting process and wishes to convey to the Cambodian people that they have the full support of the United Nations and the international community, as they exercise this most important political right. He keenly hopes that the democratic aspirations of the Cambodian people can be fully realized through the holding of truly free and fair elections.
