ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT EXPRESSES SYMPATHY TO GOVERNMENT AND PEOPLE OF PAPUA NEW GUINEA

19980720 The following statement was issued today by the spokesman for the President of the General Assembly:

The President of the General Assembly, Hennadiy Udovenko (Ukraine), is following with grave concern reports of a mounting death toll in wake of a devastating tidal wave that struck the north-west coast of Papua New Guinea last week. The President would like to express his heartfelt sympathy to the Government and the people of Papua New Guinea and to convey his condolences to the families of the victims. He is hoping that the ongoing recovery efforts will be able to prevent further loss of life and bring relief to those injured by this calamity.
