SECRETARY-GENERAL DENIES REPORTED UNITED NATIONS ROLE IN RESOLVING CONFRONTATION IN CHIAPAS
19980713 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Kofi Annan:The Secretary-General's remarks on Chiapas last Friday, 10 July, appear to have been misinterpreted in some press reports. Notwithstanding his concern at the continuing confrontation in that part of Mexico, about which he has been provided with informative material by the Government, nothing that the Secretary-General said should be perceived as an offer to play a role in the resolution of the issue. Such a role could only be contemplated if certain conditions were to be fulfilled, including a request from the Mexican Government. The United Nations cooperates with Mexico in many ways, including the electoral field during the last years. Mexico also plays a key role in United Nations efforts in the fight against drugs. During his forthcoming visit, the Secretary-General is prepared to discuss this cooperation with the Mexican authorities.
