SECRETARY-GENERAL WELCOMES AGREEMENT ON SUSPENSION OF HOSTILITIES IN BURUNDI

19980622 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General of the United Nations welcomes the agreement on suspension of hostilities in Burundi which has generated hope in the peace process. He congratulates the participants in the all-party talks which took place in Arusha from 15 to 21 June under the auspices of the facilitator, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.

The Secretary-General urges all the parties signatories to the Arusha Declaration of 21 June to strictly and fully implement their commitment to a cessation of hostilities with a view to establishing a favourable environment for the substantive negotiations scheduled to commence on 20 July at Arusha.
