SECRETARY-GENERAL REITERATES APPEAL TO ERITREA AND ETHIOPIA

19980622 The following statement was issued on Friday, 19 June, by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General has been following closely the efforts of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in its quest for a peaceful resolution of the conflict between Eritrea and Ethiopia.

He welcomes the intention expressed by both parties to seek a peaceful solution to the dispute and to avoid further escalation of the conflict. He also appreciates efforts made thus far by the two countries to exercise restraint.

However, he is gravely concerned that the latest reports on these mediation efforts indicate a significant lack of progress.

The Secretary-General, therefore, reiterates his appeal to both Eritrea and Ethiopia to avoid any action that could escalate the conflict and to continue working with the OAU towards a full cessation of hostilities, so that the dispute can be settled by peaceful means.
