NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS UNITED NATIONS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL TO HOLD GRADUATION CEREMONY IN GENERAL ASSEMBLY HALL ON FRIDAY, 19 JUNE

19980618

The United Nations International School (UNIS) 1998 graduation will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, 19 June, in the General Assembly Hall. The UNIS Class of 1998 will be addressed by Kate Burton, a graduate of UNIS Class of 1975 and Honorary Trustee on the UNIS Board of Trustees. Ms. Burton is a well-known actress who has appeared on Broadway, in television shows and films.

This year's graduating class of 109 young men and women represents 61 different nations and cultures. By learning and socializing together on a daily basis, these students have demonstrated that political, geographical, racial or cultural differences are minor in comparison to what they have in common.

The UNIS was founded in 1947 by a group of United Nations parents to provide an education that fostered global sensibility for their children. What began modestly as a nursery school for 20 children is now a co-educational, college preparatory school enrolling 1,502 children from 106 countries. A suburban campus in Queens houses 230 students from kindergarten through grade 8, while the campus in Manhattan enrols 1,272 in kindergarten through grade 12. The UNIS serves a wide range of families living in the New York metropolitan area, including many affiliated with the United Nations and the city's international community.

The K-12 programme of study is a rigorous one, culminating in the UNIS or International Baccalaureate Diploma. This Diploma provides entry into universities throughout the world and prepares them for the challenges of the twenty-first century.
