AGREEMENT ON IMPLEMENTATION OF CEASEFIRE IN BOUGAINVILLE SIGNED TODAY
19980430 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:The agreement covering the implementation of the ceasefire in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, was signed today, 30 April, in Arawa, Bougainville, Papua New Guinea. The agreement supplements the Lincoln Agreement on Peace, Security and Development on Bougainville, endorsed last week by the Security Council. The Secretary-General was represented at the signing ceremony by Francesc Vendrell, Director of the Asia and the Pacific Division of the Department of Political Affairs.
Mr. Vendrell has concurrently headed a United Nations team to assess how best the Secretary-General could respond to the functions assigned to the United Nations under the two agreements mentioned above. That mission will return to New York next week.
