NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MALAYSIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Hasmy Agam, the new Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the United Nations, this afternoon presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan. He has been Malaysia's Alternate Permanent Representative since 1996.

Prior to that assignment, Mr. Hasmy was Deputy Secretary-General for International Organizations and Multilateral Economics at Malaysia's Foreign Ministry, from January 1994 to July 1996. During 1993, he was the Ministry's Director-General on relations with the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN), before which he served as Ambassador to France, with concurrent accreditation to Portugal (1990-1992).

In an earlier assignment at the United Nations, Mr. Hasmy was Alternate Permanent Representative in 1988, with primary responsibility as Alternate Delegate to the Security Council. He was Ambassador to Libya, and concurrently High Commissioner to Malta, from 1986. He has also served at his country's missions in Washington, Viet Nam and London.

Mr. Hasmy began his career in 1968, as Assistant Secretary in Malaysia's Foreign Ministry. In addition to various positions in the Foreign Ministry over the years, he has served at his country's missions in Saigon, Washington, Hanoi and London. In 1981, he was seconded to the National Institute of Public Administration as head of its Centre for International Relations and Diplomacy.

Mr. Hasmy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Malaysia, and a Master's degree in international relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in the United States.

Born on 3 February 1944 in Malacca, Malaysia, Mr. Hasmy is married and has two children.
