SECRETARY-GENERAL URGES GOVERNMENT OF TAJIKISTAN AND UNITED TAJIK OPPOSITION TO RESTORE LAW AND ORDER; CONDEMNS ATTACKS AGAINST POLICE AND TROOPS

19980325 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Kofi Annan:

The situation in Tajikistan has deteriorated over the last 24 hours, as a result of attacks by opposition groups against government police and troops east of Dushanbe. Numerous casualties were reported. The Secretary-General condemns these attacks. He calls on the leaders of the United Tajik Opposition (UTO) to withdraw their personnel and urges the Government and the UTO to work together in order to restore law and order, in accordance with their commitments under the peace accords.
