DPI LAUNCHES INTERNET PROJECT, 'ATLAS OF STUDENT ACTION FOR THE PLANET'
19980323 Schools, Community Groups Invited to Inform UN CyberSchoolBus of Their Environmental EffortsThe Department of Public Information (DPI) is compiling an Atlas of Student Action for the Planet as part of its observance of World Environment Day, 5 June.
The Atlas, which will list and describe projects carried out by students around the world, is intended to serve both as a point of reference and as an inspiration. The DPI is interested in what schools or community groups are doing to protect the environment. The lessons they have learned, the solutions they have devised and the problems they have encountered are of interest to other schools and groups around the world, as they might be facing similar problems.
Schools and community groups that have carried out environmental projects are invited to send a description of their activities to the Atlas project. Contributions are being collected via the Internet, either by a special e-mail form or a form on the world wide web. All contributions will be recognized at an event at United Nations Headquarters on 5 June. The most innovative and interesting reports will later be selected for inclusion in a printed booklet.
The Atlas of Student Action for the Planet is a project of the UN CyberSchoolBus and the Public Liaison Service of DPI, in conjunction with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The CyberSchoolBus is an on-line education service offering a wealth of information, activities and teaching resources designed to engage as well as inform.
