UNITED NATIONS ONLINE EDUCATIONAL SERVICE SEEKS STORIES OF STUDENT ACTIONS IN SUPPORT OF HUMAN RIGHTS

19980323 UN CyberSchoolBus to Compile Stories As Source of Inspiration for New Action

The UN CyberSchoolBus, an Internet-based online educational service of the Department of Public Information (DPI), has designed a special project to compile a global atlas of student actions in the field of human rights, in honour of the fiftieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The project, "Human Rights in Action", focuses on student action. It aims to demonstrate that young people are actively concerned about the human rights situation in various parts of the world, that the notion of rights has relevance everywhere in the world and that young students can indeed make a difference in bringing about change.

The UN CyberSchoolBus would like to collect inspiring stories of classes or schools defending and promoting human rights in their own communities, neighbourhoods and cities. By compiling these stories of student action, it hopes to create a global resource that will provide concrete examples to emulate and inspire new and original actions. The students' efforts will be recognized on Human Rights Day, 10 December.

Through vast networks of schools and organizations, the UN CyberSchoolBus offers a wealth of information, activities and teaching resources designed for students, schools and educators. The teaching materials provided on its web site give students an understanding of human rights in general and of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in particular.

The stories of student action should be forwarded by a special e-mail form, in accordance with guidelines posted on the CyberSchoolBus web site. Further information is available at http://www.un.org/Pubs/CyberSchoolBus/ humanrights. Please e-mail any questions about the project to "globalschoolbus@un.org".
