HUMAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE APPROVES LIST OF ISSUES TO BE RAISED WHEN IT CONSIDERS REPORTS OF ECUADOR, FINLAND

19980323 Will Begin Consideration of Country Reports Tomorrow, with Third Periodic Report of Cyprus

The Human Rights Committee this afternoon approved the list of issues to be taken up when it considers the reports of Ecuador and Finland on their compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

At the first meeting of its current session this morning, the Committee approved the list of issues it would raise with the delegations of Cyprus, Uruguay and Zimbabwe.

The Committee will also consider communications under the Covenant's first Optional Protocol, which provides for confidential consideration of communications from individuals who claim that their rights under the Covenant have been violated.

The five countries presenting reports are among the 140 States parties to the International Covenant. The Committee, as a monitoring body, periodically examines reports submitted by States parties on their promotion and protection of civil and political rights. Representatives of those governments introduce their country reports and respond to oral and written questions from the Committee's 18 members, who serve in their personal capacity.

The Committee will meet again at 10 a.m. tomorrow, 24 March, to begin consideration of the third periodic report of Cyprus.
