ASSEMBLY APPOINTS ARMANDO DUQUE GONZALEZ (COLOMBIA) TO JIU FOR FIVE-YEAR TERM BEGINNING ON 1 JANUARY 1999
19980323 The General Assembly this morning appointed Armando Duque Gonzalez (Colombia) to the Joint Inspection Unit (JIU) for a five-year term beginning on 1 January 1999, to fill a vacancy that will arise on 31 December with the expiration of the term of office of Raul Quijano (Argentina).The current members of the JIU are Louis Dominique Ouedraogo (Burkina Faso), Fatih Bouayad-Agha (Algeria), Sumihiro Kuyama (Japan), Kahlil Issa Othman (Jordan), Andrzej Abraszewski (Poland), Eduard Kudriavtsev (Russian Federation), Homero Luis Hernandez Sanchez (Dominican Republic), retiring member Raul Quijano (Argentina), John D. Fox (United States), Wolfgang M. Munch (Germany) and Francesco Mezzalama (Italy).
Mr. Quijano is the only member whose term expires this year.
Also this morning, the Assembly reopened its agenda sub-item on "Appointment of members of the United Nations Administrative Tribunal", allocating it to the Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary). The Committee is expected to recommend someone to complete the term of the late Francis Spain (Ireland), which expires on 31 December 1998.
In other business, the Assembly took note of the fact that Azerbaijan, Costa Rica, Gambia, Qatar, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Turkmenistan had made the necessary payments to reduce their arrears below the amount specified in Article 19 of the Charter, by which their voting rights would have been suspended.
