NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

19980313 Biographical Note George W. McKenzie, the new Permanent Representative of Trinidad and Tobago to the United Nations, this afternoon presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Prior to assuming his current post, Mr. McKenzie served as his country's Counsel General to New York, a position he held since February 1995. Mr. McKenzie also served in Trinidad and Tobago's Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the Director of the Consular Affairs, Information, Culture and Library Services Division from 1994 to 1995. From 1990 to 1994, Mr. McKenzie was a Foreign Service Officer in Trinidad and Tobago's Ministry of External Affairs. In that capacity, he was appointed by the President of Trinidad and Tobago to serve as Secretary of the Football Commission of Enquiry.

From 1981 to 1989, he was Counsellor and Alternate Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS), while attached to Trinidad and Tobago's Embassy in Washington, D.C. While serving in that position, Mr. McKenzie was appointed Chairman of the Programme and Budget Committee of the OAS Permanent Council (1987) and Vice-Chairman of the Programme and Budget Committee of the OAS General Assembly (1986). He was also asked to serve as the Director of the OAS Programme Budget.

From 1978 to 1981, Mr. McKenzie was Director of the Information and Culture Department of the Ministry of External Affairs in Port of Spain. He was the Acting High Commissioner of the Trinidad and Tobago High Commission in Georgetown, Guyana, from 1977 to 1978. Prior to that, from 1973 to 1977, Mr. McKenzie was a Deputy High Commissioner to Georgetown. From 1970 to 1973, he was the First Secretary to the Head of Consular and Students' Department of the Trinidad and Tobago High Commission in London. He served as Foreign Service Officer in the Ministry of External Affairs in Port of Spain, from 1969 to 1970.

Prior to beginning his diplomatic career, Mr. McKenzie served as Graduate Master, Head of the History Department of Naparima College in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago, from 1967 to 1970. From 1966 to 1967, he was Graduate Master, Head of the History Department of Iere High School in Siparia, Trinidad. He also taught at Presentation College in San Fernando from 1961 to 1962.

Mr. McKenzie received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of New Brunswick, Canada, in 1966, and a Diploma in International Relations from the University of the West Indies, in 1969.

Born on 20 August 1942, Mr. McKenzie is married and has two children.
