DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC INFORMATION ACHIEVES PROGRESS TOWARDS GENDER PARITY
19980312 The Assistant Secretary-General for Public Information, Samir Sanbar, announced today that since the inception of the current placement and promotion system in November 1993, 60 per cent of all those placed or promoted in the Department of Public Information have been women.As of 31 December 1997, 33.3 per cent of those at the level of Principal Officer (D-1) were women, as were 50 per cent of those at the Director (D-2) level, thus surpassing the Secretary-General's goal of bringing the gender balance in the Secretariat to 25 per cent women at the D-1 level and above by June 1997.
In addition, the overall ratio of women occupying departmental posts subject to geographical distribution has increased to 51.5 per cent, thereby contributing to the Secretary-General's goal of achieving 50-50 parity between men and women overall in the Secretariat by the year 2000.
