SECRETARY-GENERAL ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF MAJOR-GENERAL TIMOTHY FORD OF AUSTRALIA AS CHIEF OF STAFF OF UNTSO

19980303 Biographical Note Secretary-General Kofi Annan has announced the appointment of Major- General Timothy Ford of Australia as Chief of Staff of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO). He will take over the command from Major-General Rufus Modupe Kupolati of Nigeria, who will end his tour of duty on 31 March.

Major-General Ford was born on 29 August 1945. He was commissioned as an officer in 1966 and has held his present rank since 1996. Among his several appointments, he was Director Artillery, Director Plans-Army, Director-General Force Development (land) and Chief of Staff at Land Headquarters. His present appointment is Commander, Headquarters 1st Division.

Major-General Ford has a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He has attended a number of courses both in Australia and overseas. The latter include Gunnery Staff Course (in the United Kingdom), Army War College (in the United States) and Command and Staff College (India).

Major-General Ford is married and has two children.
