SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION ADOPTS 1999 PROVISIONAL AGENDA

19980220 The Commission for Social Development this morning adopted the provisional agenda for its 1999 session, under which it will consider two priority themes.

By the provisional agenda (document E/CN.5/1998/L.3), introduced by the Commission's Chairman, Aurelio Fernandez (Spain), the two priority themes for the Commission's thirty-seventh session will be social services for all and initiation of an overall review of the implementation of the goals identified at the World Summit for Social Development (Copenhagen, 1995). Also, the Commission will review United Nations plans and programmes pertaining to social groups, including issues related to ageing and, in particular, the International Year of Older Persons (1999). The Commission will also have before it the report of the outcome of the Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth, to be held in Lisbon from 8 to 12 August 1998.

Also during next year's session, the Commission will continue to take up issues relating to: an enabling environment for social goals; the special situation of Africa and the least developed countries; social priorities in structural adjustment programmes; resource mobilization; and cooperation at all levels for social development.

Also, according the provisional agenda, the Commission will continue to consider its substantive topics from a gender perspective. Further, it will ensure that matters related to the family and to persons with disabilities will be an integral part of its work, in accordance with resolutions adopted by the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council.

The Commission will meet again at 5 p.m. today to take action on draft texts, including the Commission's agreed conclusions.
