SECRETARY-GENERAL EXPRESSES SORROW OVER DEVASTATION, LARGE LOSS OF LIFE CAUSED BY EARTHQUAKES IN AFGHANISTAN
19980209The following was issued on Saturday, 7 February, by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:
The Secretary-General has learned with sorrow of the devastation and the large loss of life caused by the earthquake and its aftershocks which struck northern Afghanistan this week. He has instructed the United Nations mission in that country and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance to Afghanistan in Islamabad and Dushanbe to send teams to assess the situation and humanitarian needs and to offer whatever humanitarian assistance necessary. The Secretary-General expresses his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.
