SECRETARY-GENERAL EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER POLITICAL STALEMATE IN TAJIKISTAN

19980119 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General views with concern the current political stalemate between the Government of Tajikistan and the United Tajik Opposition, which appears to have deepened in recent days. He urges both sides to discuss their differences in an open and constructive manner with a view to overcoming the stalemate and moving forward with the peace process.
