NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF CHAD PRESENTS CREDENTIALS
19980114 Biographical NoteAhmat A. Haggar, the new Permanent Representative of Chad, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan this afternoon.
Mr. Haggar joined the civil service of Chad in 1972, serving as the Deputy Prefect of Am Timan (Salamat Prefecture). He entered the diplomatic service in 1974, and became Minister for Foreign Affairs in 1994.
After service as Second Counsellor, and subsequently First Counsellor, at the Permanent Mission of Chad to the United Nations from 1982 to 1992, he was his country's Ambassador to Zaire from 1992 to 1994.
Earlier in his diplomatic career, from 1978 to 1982, Mr. Haggar was Charge d'Affaires at the Embassy of Chad in Romania. This followed service as First Counsellor at the Embassy of Chad in Sudan from 1974 to 1975, and as Chief of the Middle East Division at the Foreign Ministry from 1975 to 1978.
Mr. Haggar completed his post-graduate studies at the Ecole Nationale d'Administration et de la Magistrature in Ndjamena, Chad, and attended a course in diplomacy at the Institute des Relations Internationales du Cameroun.
Born on 6 February 1950, Mr. Haggar is married with seven children.
