SECRETARY-GENERAL STRONGLY CONDEMNS MASSACRE IN CHIAPAS, MEXICO

19971224 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for the Secretary-General:

The Secretary-General was deeply shocked to learn of the massacre in Chiapas, Mexico, in which at least 46 people, including 15 children, were killed and 25 wounded. He strongly condemns this odious crime, as he does all acts of terrorism, and supports President Ernesto Zedillo's efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.

In Somalia, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that more than 124,000 people have been impacted by seasonal rains. The United Nations, with its partners, have pre-positioned supplies in nearly two dozen hotspot districts to meet the needs of nearly 770,000 people who are expected to be impacted.
