BANGLADESH JOINS STAND-BY ARRANGEMENTS FOR PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS

19971211 Bangladesh yesterday became the thirteenth country to sign a memorandum of understanding on the stand-by arrangements for United Nations peacekeeping operations.

The signing ceremony took place in the Office of the Under-Secretary- General for Peacekeeping Operations, Bernard Miyet. The Permanent Representative of Bangladesh, Anwarul Karim Chowdhury, signed the memorandum for his country; the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations signed it on behalf of the United Nations.

The twelve countries that have signed the memorandum to date are Argentina, Austria, bolivia, Denmark, Ghana, Italy,Jordan, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore, Ukraine, and Uruguay.

Argentina was the last country to join the arrangements. The Argentine Defence Minister, Dr. Jorge Dominguez, signed the memorandum at the time of his visit to United Nations Headquarters on 18 November.

To date, 6 countries have officially expressed their willingness to participate in the stand-by arrangements, which was created in 1994 as a means to accelerate the deployment of a new peacekeeping operation and to enhance the rapidly the capacity of an existing mission.
