NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS PALESTINIAN EXHIBIT TO BE ON VIEW AT HEADQUARTERS, 1-7 DECEMBER
19971128A cultural exhibit presented by the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People in cooperation with the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the United Nations will be opened at 6 p.m. on Monday, 1 December, in the public lobby of the General Assembly building. Entitled "At Home in Palestine", the exhibit will be on view until Sunday, 7 December, and is associated with the annual commemoration of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.
The exhibit which will be set against a backdrop made of bamboo and brass, will feature Palestinian crafts. It will include chests of olive wood decorated with mother-of-pearl and brass, handcrafted replicas of the Dome of the Rock and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, collections of clay pottery and glass decorated with silver, embroidered items and handmade rugs, a bride's chest, and a wall hanging made of olive wood and mother-of-pearl representing Palestinian landmarks.
The exhibit will be opened by Ibra Deguene Ka (Senegal), Chairman of the Palestinian Rights Committee. A statement will also be made by the observer for Palestine. The President of the General Assembly, the Secretary-General, the President of the Security Council, all permanent representatives to the United Nations, and high-level Secretariat officials have been invited to the opening ceremony, which is expected to last about 45 minutes.
Following the statements, the Chairman of the Committee and the observer for Palestine will escort invited guests through the exhibit.
The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is commemorated in accordance with the provisions of General Assembly resolution 32/40 B of 2 December 1977.
Nawaf Hamed and Jamal Al Afaghani, artists representing the Committee for Information Service of the Palestinian Authority, will take part in the opening ceremony, and will be available during the week of the exhibition to provide information about it.
