NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF CYPRUS PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

19971114 Biographical Note Soterios, Zackheos, the new Permanent Representative of Cyprus, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan today.

Before assuming his current post, Mr. Zackheos was his country's Permanent Representative at the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva. He had earlier served his Government as Director of Political Affairs at the Foreign Ministry, and also as Director of Economic Affairs at the Ministry. He served as non-resident Ambassador of Cyprus to Lebanon, based in Nicosia. He has held other senior positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He played major role in the formulation and execution of his country's policies towards the Middle East, Central and Eastern Europe, and the countries of the former Soviet Union. From 1989 to 1993, Mr. Zackheos served as the first Cyprus Resident Ambassador to China, with concurrent accreditations to Japan, Pakistan, the Philippines and Mongolia. He was Counsellor at his Embassy in Moscow from 1979 to 1985. He has represented Cyprus at United Nations General Assembly sessions, and also at other meetings held under the auspices of the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement, the Council of Europe and the Group of 77 developing countries.

In 1977 Mr. Zackheos received his Master's Degree in Political Science from Stanford University in the United States, as a Fulbright Scholar, following a B.A. in Economic and Political Sciences from the University of Athens in 1976, and a B.A. in Law, also from the University of Athens, in 1972.

Born on 24 January 1950, Mr. Zackheos is married and has two children.
