NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF GAMBIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

19971114 Biographical Note

Abdoulie Momodou Sallah, the new Permanent Representative of Gambia to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Before his current appointment, Mr. Sallah was his country's High Commissioner/Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea and Côte d'Ivoire (1995-1997). He had earlier served in a number of Government positions, three times as Secretary to the Cabinet during periods beginning in 1982. He was Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Defence (1991-1992), and Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture (1984-1987).

From 1976-1979 he was Clerk of the House of Representatives, following three years as Secretary, Training and Recruitment. Earlier, he held the posts of Secretary of the Public Service Commission (1971-1973) and of Assistant Divisional Commissioner and Divisional Commissioner (1969-1971).

After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree with honours in French from the University of Ibadan in Nigeria (1969), Mr. Sallah completed the United Kingdom Management Services Course at the Royal Institute of Public Administration (1973), and the Australia Staff Training Officer Course at the International Training Institute in Sydney, Australia (1976). Before his graduation from Gambia High School in 1965, he had attended the Methodist Boys' High School (1958-1959) and the Dankunku Primary School (1952-1957).

Born on 24 August 1944 in Sambang, Gambia, Mr. Sallah is married with eight children.
