NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS PANEL DISCUSSION ON PRISONS AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE TO BE HELD AT HEADQUARTERS ON 27 OCTOBER
19971024A panel discussion on "prisons and substance abuse" will be held at Headquarters on Monday, 27 October, from 1:15 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. in Conference Room 7.
The moderator will be Judge Milton Mollen, who led the "Mollen" Commission, which investigated police corruption in New York City's Police Department from 1992 to 1994, and who was also Deputy Mayor for Public Safety in New York City. Other speakers will include: State Senator Catherine Abate, who is currently running for the office of Attorney General of New York State; Reginald Wilkinson, President of the American Correctional Association; Robert Gangi, Executive Director of the Correctional Association of New York; and Ron Susswein, Assistant Attorney General and Deputy Director of the Policy Bureau in the New Jersey Attorney General's office.
Among other issues, discussion will focus on alternatives to incarceration for drug addicted offenders and treatment programmes, both in and outside prison.
The event is also co-sponsored by the United Nations Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention and the Alliance of NGOs on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, whose members have consultative status with the Economic and Social Council.
