SECRETARY-GENERAL, UN HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR REFUGEES AGREE SHE WILL CONTINUE IN CURRENT POST

19971010

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General considers that Sadako Ogata, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), is an outstanding leader and that she would have made a fine Deputy Secretary-General, subject, of course, to the General Assembly's approval of the post. They have discussed the possibility of her taking up the position. However, given the numerous and grave refugee crises with which Mrs. Ogata is dealing, she and the Secretary-General have mutually agreed that it would be best for her to continue serving the international community in her capacity as High Commissioner for Refugees.
