ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT GRATIFIED BY AWARDING OF NOBEL PEACE PRIZE TO 'INTERNATIONAL CAMPAIGN TO BAN LANDMINES'

19971010 Following is the text of a statement attributable to the Spokesman for the President of the General Assembly, Hennadiy Udovenko (Ukraine):

The President of the General Assembly has been gratified to learn that the International Campaign to Ban Landmines was awarded the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize.

Every landmine removed translates into scores of lives saved. This is especially significant since these unseen and silent weapons pose a deadly threat to the innocent and most vulnerable members of war-ravaged countries as they strive to restore peace and normalcy to their lives.

The awarding of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize to a coalition of more than 1,000 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in more than 60 countries is a recognition of the important role civil societies and NGOs play in helping the international community cope with vital issues of peace and security.
